Why Experiences Make Better Gifts Than Stuff
Oct 22, 2024When you give an experiential gift, it’s not just about the fun of the event—it’s an opportunity to help both you and the receiver stay true to your authentic selves. Research consistently shows that gifts based on experiences bring longer-lasting happiness compared to material things. While physical gifts like clothes or gadgets might offer a quick burst of excitement, the joy from an experience lingers, creating memories that can last a lifetime. These moments connect us more deeply, not just to others, but to our most genuine selves.
We spend a lot of money on gifts (Americans spend around $130 billion a year!), and research shows that giving to others can make you happier. But when it comes to deepening relationships, not all gifts work the same way. While people often give physical gifts like clothes or gadgets, research shows that giving experiences—like trips, classes, or special events—has a bigger impact on relationships. Why? Because experiences create stronger emotions and lasting memories, which helps bring the giver and receiver closer together.
Giving experiences, such as a trip or a special event, taps into something deeper. Unlike material gifts, which might be appreciated but easily forgotten, experiences trigger stronger emotions that help build meaningful connections. When you give an experience, you invite the receiver to explore, grow, and discover more about who they are in a way that a material gift simply can’t. By helping someone step outside their daily routine and embrace something new, you're giving them space to be authentic and align with their true self.
Experiential gifts naturally create opportunities for deeper connections because they often involve spending meaningful time together. Whether it’s sharing a meal, attending a concert, or going on an adventure, these experiences allow both the giver and receiver to be fully present, fostering authentic interactions that strengthen the relationship. It’s a chance to show up as your true self and inspire others to do the same. One of my favorite experiences is the botanical garden membership my mother-in-law gifted me for Christmas. Not only has it allowed me to explore nature through the seasons, but it’s also given me the chance to enjoy time with others at events and capture picture-perfect moments, creating shared memories that last well beyond the experience itself. And the membership is able to be used at other locations, so in my travel, I have visited other botanical gardens — all at no additional cost to me.
Moreover, experiences encourage personal growth and self-discovery. Whether it’s trying something new, facing a fear, or exploring new interests, these moments push both you and the receiver to expand your horizons. This not only helps you feel more fulfilled but also helps you reconnect with the core of who you are—your authentic self. Every experience is an opportunity to learn, grow, and deepen your connection to yourself and others.
Gifting an experience is about more than just providing a good time—it’s an investment in the relationship and a way to help the other person embrace who they truly are. I love giving experiences to nurture these connections. For instance, we gifted my niece a trip to the aquarium for Christmas, where we spent a day together exploring and discovering new things while cherishing precious moments. This experience creates lasting memories, strengthens our bond, and encourages us both to live authentically and enjoy our time together. In a world full of distractions and material possessions, giving an experience shows that you value not only the relationship but also the unique person you're sharing it with. It’s a gift that says, "I see you, and I want to share something meaningful with the real you.” Younger children may need something tangible to help them envision what’s coming. To build their appreciation for experiential gifts, consider giving them a physical present that helps visualize the experience—like pictures of what they will see at the zoo or a Mickey hat to wear at Disney. This way, they can get excited about the adventure ahead!
Ultimately, experiential gifts transcend the ordinary, transforming the act of giving into a meaningful expression of love and understanding. So, the next time you consider what to give, think beyond the material and embrace the richness of shared experiences. You’ll not only make unforgettable memories but also inspire others to live authentically and fully.
