Journey to Authentic—How to Not Lose Yourself as You Travel

authentically you relationships travel Oct 01, 2024

Travel is all about exploring new places, diving into different cultures, and stepping away from everyday life. But with all the excitement, adventure, and even a little fear, it's easy to lose sight of who you are. This can especially happen when you're headed to a dream destination, like my upcoming trip to Greece—something I've imagined for years. While new experiences can change us, it's important to stay connected to who you are deep down.

Stacked Intent is based out of a question of how do you maintain your authenticity and a strong sense of self through life’s changes. Through this the question was prosed to more than 200 individuals of “how do you not let yourself vanish from relationships?” and the insights from this survey, coupled with my personal and profession experience and the information from Stacked Intent, form the basis of the guide I created: Ways to Not Let Yourself Vanish through Cracking Life's Code  and course Cracking Life’s Code: Building Strong Relationships with Self, Nutrition, and Finances. The course can be found on the Stacked Intent Course Suite page and the resources can be found on the free resource page. The guide focuses on staying true to yourself, not just in everyday life but also during transformative experiences, including travel.

How do we apply these principles of staying true to ourselves when exploring the world?

Stay True in Relationships – Even on the Go

When traveling, especially to a place you’ve dreamed of, it can be tempting to embrace every whim and stray from your usual routines. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing; after all, travel is meant to be a break from the ordinary. However, it’s essential to stay grounded in what defines your authentic self—in relationships.

  1.  Whether you're traveling solo or with others, maintaining a healthy relationship with yourself is critical. Set boundaries for personal time, even when surrounded by new people or companions. Reflect on how your experiences align with who you are, and don’t be afraid to say no to activities that don’t resonate with your values.
  2.  Pinpoint the significant sources of stress during travel. To avoid feeling lost in the moment, stick to the habits you’ve cultivated. Whether it’s sticking to a travel plan or making thoughtful purchases, continue to apply the principles you’ve developed at home.
  3.  We tend to lose ourselves when traveling and while it’s exciting to have new experiences, balancing this with the habits you’ve built is essential to feeling good physically and mentally. It’s about enjoying the moment without losing sight of what keeps you healthy and energized.

How Dream Travel Can Challenge Your Authenticity

Traveling to a dream destination, like my upcoming trip to Greece, adds an extra layer of challenge to staying grounded. When a trip has been on your mind for years, it can carry emotional weight, and the desire to make it perfect can create pressure. For me, Greece represents not just a destination, but a culmination of a dream I’ve nurtured since seeing the movie The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants as a young teen.

The key is to let the dream guide you, but not overwhelm you. It’s about finding a balance between embracing the moment and holding onto the routines and practices that define your sense of self. During the excitement of visiting a place that has captured your imagination for so long, it’s easy to lose focus on your personal intentions and well-being.

However, staying connected to the habits that support your authenticity—whether that’s journaling, meditation, or something else—can help you remain grounded. Before heading off on your dream trip, reflect on what being “authentically you” looks like in this new setting. What small routines or practices can you carry with you to stay centered?

These insights are crucial not just for life’s major changes but also for travel—especially when you’re heading somewhere that feels like the culmination of a dream. It’s easy to get swept away in the beauty, culture, and newness of it all, but with the right tools, you can fully experience these things while staying true to who you are.

As I get ready for my trip to Greece, I’m reminded that travel not only broadens our perspectives but should also strengthen our relationship with ourselves. The most vital relationship we have is with ourselves, and keeping that connection strong, even in new environments, is what makes the experience truly meaningful.

Traveling doesn’t have to mean losing yourself. With mindful preparation and a commitment to staying authentic, you can experience all the excitement of a new destination without compromising the values and practices that make you who you are. Whether it’s through sticking to your financial habits, maintaining your nutrition, or carving out time for self-reflection, you can ensure that your travels enhance your sense of self rather than dilute it.
